2017 Completed Events
March 4, 2017: It’s My Park Day, co-sponsored by The Austin Parks Foundation. Volunteers cleaned trash from Oakwood. Photography documenting was postponed due to damp weather.
April 8, 2017: Speaker Series, Ray Spivey presented his documentary “The Last of the Moonlight Towers” in 2 screening sessions at Yarborough Library
Spring 2017: SAC members attended two Community conversations led by Austin’s PARD (Parks & Recreation Department) – Cemetery Division. The purpose of the meetings was to inform the public about human remains discovered underneath or near Oakwood Chapel during the restoration project and to gather public input on the best way to commemorate the unknown people interred there. SAC conducted extensive research about the burials near the chapel, concluding that the grounds near the chapel were also the original Stranger/White and Mexican burial grounds, given the evidence of burial records and headstones nearby from the 1870s-1880s, along with later African-American burials. SAC members also attended several meetings to provide feedback on the Austin Cemetery Rules Revisions which are expected to be completed later in 2017.
