Beata (Bertha) Lundin

Wrriten by great granddaughter Lisa Lynn Lundin Melson’

My Great-Grandmother Bertha Lundin (Beata Anderson) was born December 22, 1877 in Norra Vram, Skane County, Sweden. Her father’s name was Anders Nilsson and her mother’s name was Gertrud (Olsson) Olsdotter both of Sweden.

Bertha married my Great-Grandfather Christopher (Kristofer) Lundin June 17, 1898 at the age of twenty-one. In 1907 they immigrated to America with four of their children. Alogot/Al (born 1900) was my Grandfather. Also immigrating with their parents were Ragnar/Ray (born 1901), Marta/Martha (born 1903) and Filip/Phillip (born 1906). Once in America, Ebba and Margaret were born 1913 and 1917. They had two other children that did not survive to adulthood, Gunner and Sigrid.

When they arrived in America they settled in Lund, Texas near their friends, the Larson’s. In Lund they were members of the Lund Lutheran Church. Christopher was a Saddlemaker by trade in Sweden. Once here he changed his profession to farmer. Not knowing much of the English language was difficult for them, especially Christopher. They moved several times throughout their lifetime. They lived in Taylor, Texas where they became members of the Swedish Lutheran Church in Hutto.

Bertha was very talented at tatting. Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace from a series of knots and loops. Tatting can be used to make lace edging as well as dollies, collars and other decorative pieces. All of her great-grandchildren were blessed with one of her beautiful pieces that was left after she passed away. Bertha was Naturalized as a US citizen on January 25, 1945 at the age of sixty- eight. She passed away in Austin, Texas on January 30, 1961 at the age of eighty-four. She is buried alongside her husband upon the hill[in Oakwood Cemetery.
