Evergreen/Highland Park Cemetery
Located at 3304 East 12th Street, Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1926 to serve Austin’s African American community. Evergreen Cemetery has more than 12,000 interments in its 30 acres and receives more than 100 new burials annually. SAC is currently working on creating a tour of Evergreen Cemetery to highlight some of the city’s leaders and artists interred here.
Established in 1891, Highland Park Cemetery, now a part Evergreen Cemetery, was originally a corporately held cemetery used for the burial of all races. The City of Austin used it for approximately three years (1891-1893). Although most Highland Park Cemetery records have been lost to time, it is estimated that the cemetery had approximately 500 graves, of which about 160 were pauper burials. Only a hand-full of the original Highland Park Cemetery gravestones can still be found at Evergreen Cemetery.
